This month is all about growing blueberries!

This event is free to attend, limited tickets will be offered for those wishing to bring home a blueberry plant with a pot and soil.

Schedule:

9:00 AM Social Hour and Setup

We will have some blueberry cake donuts with lemon glaze to share! Chit-chat, looking at display of THREE DOZEN five-gallon blueberry plants IN FRUIT, 3 huge new rainwater tanks, and new blueberry bed.

9:30 AM

Brief run-down on blueberry culture; why we're making the mix, why blueberries need rainwater. DEMO of pruning mature blueberry. YOU GET INFO SHEET! with blueberry culture/mix/water/pruning tips and list of low-chill varieties.

10:00 AM

YOU GET TO WORK!!!! We will be mixing up SIX CUBIC YARDS of BB mix, which is a lot. The bark and regular potting mix are not the problem. The problem is the peat-moss, which is packed in bales -- DRIED and COMPRESSED! Each clump has to be rolled between the fingers, to separate the fibers. Many hands make light work! The three main ingredients will be laid out in THREE LONG LINES, the length of the corral. Once focused work begins at ONE END of the line, mix will start being ready very quickly. So those who want to pot up their blueberry start and go, won't need to wait until the WHOLE PILE is mixed. It may take 2 hours to finish mixing the whole batch.

We have 12 starts of Vaccinium arboreum which need to get potted up as well. V. arb is much better about tolerating San Diego soil than regular blueberries.

Research and success elsewhere suggest this will be a great blueberry rootstock for San Diego. (Not for sale that day .. . the idea is, we grow them out and GRAFT THEM, and then sell them!)

YOU GET A BLUEBERRY START! (1 Per Person)

The limited Blueberry plants available are small starts, 6"-12"

SMALL! HELPLESS!! THEY ARE WAITING FOR YOUR LOVE!!!
